Fajr filmfest to award movies promoting waste reduction

Tehran Municipality has announced that the organization is planning to present special award to movies on waste reduction during the Fajr Film Festival.

Tehran Waste Management Organization director Sadreddin Alipour said “Those movies that promote less waste will be honored at the National Will Manifestation Awards this year during the Fajr Film Festival”.

“Population growth, urbanization, industrial activities and changing consumption patterns have triggered the production of millions tons of trash in the country,” he added.

The official also noted that “We need all people, one by one to be involved in this issue, and the problem needs to be highlighted in public opinion to achieve better management of waste”.

He said the Tehran Waste Management Organization will never succeed in its mission if the organization doesn’t have every individual’s contribution.

Films that promote issues being pursued by some public organizations and institutes will receive the awards at the Fajr Film Festival every year.

More than 20 movies will be premiered during the 38th Fajr Film Festival.

Based on a report published by the Tehran City Council in March, an average of 8000 to 9000 tons of household waste is generated in Tehran on a daily basis.

In addition, every Tehran citizen produces an average of 800 to 900 grams of trash every day, two to three times higher than the global average, the report said.

Some 151 titles, including 115 feature films and 36 documentaries, have applied to take part at the 38th Fajr Film Festival, the Public Relations office reported.

Some 37 movies made by first-time filmmakers are among the submitted feature films, according to the report.

The Fajr Film Festival coincides with the Ten-Day Fajr (Dawn) ceremonies across Iran, marking the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Since its establishment in 1982, the Fajr Film Festival has played a vital role in the development of Iranian Cinema.

Supervised by Iran’s Ministry of Culture, the festival hosts veteran directors and new filmmakers from Iran every year.

The 38th Fajr Film Festival is set to kick off on February 1, 2020 and will run until February 11 in Tehran.

This is while the international version of the festival will be held in April 2020.
